There are many hazards associated with construction sites. Such things as debris, high voltage, moving equipment, and explosives are only a few of the dangers involved in construction work. Consequently bold signs with clear messages can make sure unauthorized personnel are kept away from danger and that workers take appropriate safety precautions. For example, general construction signs may warn about blasting, indicate the way to certain areas, or could politely ask passers-by to excuse the appearance while the site is under construction.

Safety is an important consideration for all construction area signs, especially those used to keep trespassers out, or used to ensure that untrained visitors don’t encounter danger at the job-site. They are also used to remind workers to protect themselves and wear the proper safety equipment.

Often, construction area signs are used in roadway projects to identify the beginning and ending points of project work on highways. They often include temporary signs required for the direction of public traffic through and around the work during project or building construction. Temporary traffic control signs will be used to show lane or ramp closures.

In California there are standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices, including construction work zones as defined in The California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD).
