SignWorks was recently contacted by the U.S. Coast Guard and asked if we could recreate two interior warning signs based on the photograph they supplied.  The 24” square signs were for interior use so we used 3mm thick PVC and black and red cut vinyl to create the signs after sending an approval proof.  This was a very straight forward project and we felt honored to be asked to produce them.  There is just something about providing products and services to the military that elicits a sense of pride.  After all, it is our military that keeps our country safe!

The U.S. Coast Guard has been around since 1808 when it was charged with enforcing the 1807 law preventing the impartation of slaves by sea.  The Revenue Cutter Service was charged with enforcing the law on the high seas.  The history of the agency is chronicled on its website and includes the history of the Revenue Cutter Service, the Life-Saving Service, the Lighthouse Service, the Bureau of Navigation, and the Steamboat Inspection Service.

Our company makes all types of warning, safety and property restriction signs for interior as well as exterior use.  Typically we us PVC for the interior signs and aluminum (or aluminum composite) sheeting material and sign blanks for the exterior ones.  Depending on the overall size of the finished sign blank we select from a variety of thicknesses.  For signs larger than 24” wide we recommend a .063 or .080 sign blank thickness.  This can vary depending on the application and whether the sign is being mounted to a flat surface vs. a pole or chain link fence.
