The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) defines the standards nationwide for the signs and traffic devices used on public streets, freeways, private roads and bike paths. It is published by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and sets standards for road markings, highway signs and signals, as well as traffic control devices. It gets updated periodically based on changing transportation guidelines and new safety regulations.
The signs can be grouped into a number of categories including parking, traffic and warning signs. The signs are made of heavy-duty aluminum and last about 10 years outdoors. They also feature three different grades of reflectivity (engineer grade, high intensity grade, and diamond grade) to maximize nighttime visibility.
