We are happy to report that a major project for The Hotel Castro in San Francisco is finally complete. The project consisted of an assortment of signs including several ADA signs (Americans with Disabilities) room identification signs, evacuation maps (12 room maps and 15 floor maps), dimensional lettering and the ten 12” by 18” brushed aluminum stair/floor identification signs. The process took an extended period of time given changes to the original color palette and the delayed decision making regarding the style and type of dimensional letters used for the directional signs for floors two through four. SignWorks was tasked to supply guidance regarding compliance with local ordinances, especially as it related to ADA requirements and complying with the San Francisco Fire Department Guidelines for the 8½” by 11” room evacuation and 16” by 20” floor evacuation maps.
The client decided that some of the ADA signs would have a grey background with black text while their exit signs and some others would feature black backgrounds with white text and braille. The ADA signs ranged in size from 5” by 5” to 6 ½” wide by 6 ½” tall for the exit and exit route signs, as well as the two custom ADA signs in custom colors. In addition, there were also the larger stair/floor identification signs and the evacuation signs which featured the required non-glare lens and text sizes as mandated by San Francisco Fire Department guidelines.
Our client, a small boutique hotel in the iconic Castro district of San Francisco, is centrally located amongst the areas buzzing restaurants, bars, and boutiques. The hotel provides and curates an intimate experience offering 12 rooms, each inspired by LGBTQ+ heroes, past and present where every room is outfitted with a private terrace. The interior of the hotel boasts a Technicolor splash that combines contemporary design, in rich jewel tones, with an understated nod to the 70’s. This hotel gem pairs elevated expectations with make yourself at home charm, while offering a more modern minimalistic vibe. Intimate sleeping nooks, floor-to-ceiling windows and contemporary furnishings all add to the charming ambiance.
One of the important things to recognize about ADA signs and evacuation maps is that there are specific mounting guidelines that must adhered to or the signs can be deemed out of compliance. Our installers typically must make sure they take a measuring tool in order to ensure that the signs are installed at the appropriate height.
