When SignWorks was approached by the Operations Director at the Richmond Art Center it was unclear whether there were City of Richmond Evacuation Map Guidelines to follow. As it turned out, the City of Richmond, like many city’s these days, simply adopted the guidelines of a neighboring city. In their case the City of Oakland. Since we have worked on so many evacuation maps projects in Oakland, this made things very straight forward for our team.
After obtaining core drawings of the building, it was determined that only three maps would be required, one at the entry and one each at the two stairwells. Design staff dropped in the egress paths, and required symbols, and our client was set with the map copies she needed for the fire department review and approval process. Once we incorporated some minor edits, the maps were approved for fabrication. The result was three 14” by 14” maps mounted to non-glare acrylic with the installation completed a few days ago.
We continue to work on other evacuation map projects in-house and have two sizeable evacuation maps projects pending in San Francisco. In the past we have produced evacuation maps for several buildings and apartment complexes in Oakland and San Leandro, as well as for a Gap facility renovation in Pleasanton. In San Francisco we’ve made evacuation maps for three separate location including San Francisco Muni. And, we produced small room evacuation maps for a boutique hotel in Palo Alto. Despite differing guidelines we have taken the time to familiarized ourselves with each one.
