SignWorks works with a variety of subcontractors to produce a variety of sign types and we thought we would share some insights on a recent sign projects for a local restaurant, AGA Grill and Kebab House. Most illuminated signs fall into two broad categories, illuminated sign cabinets which can assume a variety of shapes, and/or individual channel letter signs. The sign pictured is a combination of both, a small illuminated sign cabinet on top right and a series of individual channel letters beside and below the small cabinet sign. The overall measurement are 13 ft. wide by 3ft. tall and the illuminated acrylic LED channel letters and cabinet is 5” deep and was fabricated by our local Hayward fabricator who also performs electrical sign installation.
When thinking about illuminated channel letters it is important that the letter stroke width be broad enough to allow room for the LED bulbs in the back. When working with Gemini, another trusted fabricator of illuminated signs, please note that the company has a minimum stroke width of 1” for their stainless steel illuminated channel letters as well as a letter height minimum of 6”. All of their products comply with UL specification standards and testing, as needed for all electrical signs. Gemini also offers illuminated formed plastic logo signs and lettering.
Individual letters and shaped boxes that contain a lighting element behind them are typically lit by either neon tubing or LED bulbs, with LED being the most prevalent nowadays. The fact that they “light up” makes them highly visible and therefore very effective for both outdoor and indoor use. Outdoor electrical signs require a permit.
There are various to illuminate channel letters. The letters can be front lit, reverse lit and both front and back lit. Different types of lighting produce different lighting effects. For example, a reverse channel letter means the space “behind” the letter lights up. This makes the letter appear to “glow” instead of the light shining through the letter itself.
A variety of buildings, shopping centers, retailers, grocery outlets as well as banks, churches and schools use Illuminated channel letters like the ones pictured. They create a professional looking sign that will stand out, especially at night. It is very important to maintain your illuminated channel letters and keep them in good working order. And, you should try to avoid burnt out letters and the awkward spelling errors created by poor sign maintenance as this sends the wrong message to potential customers.
