SignWorks works with a variety of builders and contractors and was asked to weigh in on the production of some affordable exterior building signs for a local school. While the Hayward School District had called for “embossed” signs which we took to mean tactile (raised letters), the builder had been tasked to find the most affordable option. Since the signs were going to be used outdoors and the budget was limited, we suggested DiBond. It is an aluminum composite comprised of two thin sheets of aluminum with a corrugated plastic core. The material is light weight, yet suitable for extended life outdoors.
The contractor was concerned about the cost of adding dimensional letters to this substrate because of the concern that high school kids might be inclined to vandalize the signs by separating the letters from the DiBond backer (because it is not an integrated singular material). Cut vinyl letters, though more affordable, also left a concern about the separate lettering being peeled away from the DiBond backer. To prevent this we proposed that the cut vinyl letters be covered with a laminate to make it less easy for the lettering to be peeled away from the substrate.
We’re not exactly sure of when the district will make its decision but we can attest to the long term durability of DiBond. We have worked with several local business owners on a variety of exterior building signs, some with simple cut vinyl graphics and others with digital print overlays. The combination of this affordable light weight material, along with the extended outdoor durability, makes it an excellent choice!
