SignWorks has worked on a multitude of different post and panel signs across a host of industries and in a variety of different style. Often we are tasked to create project identification signs for contractors large and small and typically these signs are constructed of a wood panel (in either ½” or ¾” thick MDO). The MDO comes already primed so mounting the cut vinyl or digital print is fairly straight forward. Generally we prime the edges with white paint to added additional protection against the outdoor elements. The signs are usually mounted between treated wood posts.
MDO signs are also very popular in the commercial real estate industry. They are used to advertise available leasing space and/or vacant lots/acreage. The posts are generally not cemented in place as the signs are not permanent.
Another variation is when we use Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) such as DiBond. The material comes in ¼” and ½” thickness and is comprised of a corrugated plastic core sandwiched between two thin sheets of aluminum. It makes for a fairly lightweight rigid sign that is appropriate for outdoor use but light weight. Often the ¼” ACM is used on chain link fences and not just between wood or galvanized posts.
Another type of material called HDU (High Density Urethane) is used for post and panel signs, especially in parks, boardwalks and other natural setting. These signs are typically sand blasted and take on a layered wood look. And, HDU is not the only option since redwood and cedar are other sand blasting material options. What makes HDU more popular is that it is impervious to rot, bird droppings and termites, hence it is the most popular option of the three.
Adding dimensional logo/lettering to the panel face can add yet another dimension!
