SignWorks worked with Alameda County Mosquito Abatement facilities staff to develop new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signs for the facility.  They wanted a more modern look and opted for a metallic looking acrylic background with black tactile letters and braille.  Because they are in the process of redecorating the space, they wanted a modern upscale look.

The Americans with Disabilities Act for Tactile & Braille is comprised of a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability under certain circumstances. The lack of accessibility or access to certain goods and services can be considered discriminatory, regardless of who it actually affects. The result is the need for ADA compliant signs because individuals with disabilities may not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.  They are afforded the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, or accommodations that we are all privy to.

The process with our client, Alameda County Mosquito Abatement, started in November 2019 when they provided a map of the facility.  The client simultaneously asked that our wholesaler supply color samples showing the background and text color options.  Once the review was complete, we provided color chips of available metallic looking material for final review and approval.  The process took a month. Once we were clear on the selection, art proofs were generated and final edits were incorporated.

The production and fabrication took 3-4 weeks and the signs were shipped to us for installation at the client’s Hayward, CA location. The signs included twenty-six ADA room signs measuring 7” by 5” and six at 8” by 7” along with eight interior window signs at 7” by 5”.  In addition, the order included five custom double sided flag mounted fire signs and four 12” by 12” rest room signs.

Our client, Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District, is committed to improving the health and comfort of Alameda County residents by making sure it controls mosquitoes and limits the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases.

Our work in the ADA arena has included several large scale projects with lots of ADA compliant and fire signs, e.g. the 20 story building renovation at 75 Hawthorne Street in San Francisco and the renovation work at one of the GAP buildings in Pleasanton.  We previously worked with Turner Construction to complete the signage for the Oakland Airport BART Connector project which called for several ADA signs.  Our recently completed apartment building renovation project for Pacific West Apartment in San Leandro included several ADA signs and evacuation maps.
