We had worked with the Carl’s Jr. owner in Oakland to replace his sign faces and he referred us to another store in Redwood City whose frontal store sign was old and faded. One true thing about illuminated cabinet signs, – they are highly visible, especially at night! Customers often experience sticker shock when they hear the cost of replacing one, but thankfully replacing just the faces is an option that makes the sign look new but at a much more affordable price point. Another truth, these outdoor signs are highly customizable and are built to spec with premium materials that can last for decades. So much so that if the building ever changes hands and becomes a totally different entity, the new business may opt to take advantage of the existing sign cabinet.
When Carl’s Jr. ®, Redwood City, approached SignWorks, about their worn graphics on their cabinet sign we immediately scheduled a site survey to confirm measurements, especially given the angled corners on the sign cabinet. As they say, measure twice, cut once! Making sure that the LEXAN sign face was sized exactly at 36” tall and 144” wide with 9” angled corners make for a correct fit…the first time. And, in this instance the LEXAN is contour cut on a CNC router by our supplier, Mr. Plastic’s in San Leandro who we have been partnering with for years. We already had the corporate logo and pantone colors in our design files from the previous Oakland job.
In 1941 Carl’s Jr. was started by Carl N. Karcher who dreamed of owning a small business. Carl’s wife Margaret borrowed $311 to purchase a hot dog cart. That first cart soon grew to four and within five short years Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue opened, and with hamburgers on the menu. Today there are more than 1,100 Carl’s Jr. restaurants worldwide.
