When the office of California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. needed a trade show display in a hurry, they contacted SignWorks, Inc., Hayward, CA. As a certified woman-owned and minority-owned business, SignWorks is a trusted vendor for state and city governments across the East Bay area. SignWorks’ many certifications include the State of California Department of General Services (DGS) Certification required to provide products and services to the State through the minority-owned business bidding process.

The Governor’s office chose two displays for their upcoming event in Washington D.C. The first, an eye-catching HopUp display, includes a photo-quality graphic printed on fabric that stretches to fit the 259” wide by 89.5” high frame and end caps. The graphics bleed off the edge of the fabric for a polished, professional look. The flat-faced display includes a roto-molded pop-up case with a storage compartment that protects the display’s internal lighting unit.

The second, a table top trade show display, is a 142.5” wide by 89.5” high curved frame with the same stretch fabric face and silver hardware. Both displays were shipped by Orbus, a wholesale manufacturer offering the highest quality products with expedited production and shipping as needed. The displays were shipped to Washington, D.C.

Minority-owned business certifications help small manufacturing businesses compete on a more equal footing with large businesses for state-funded projects until they exceed a 100 employees or average gross annual receipts of $15 million over three tax years. The size and income limits include any affiliated businesses. The business must also be independently owned and operated; not dominant in its field of operation; have its principal office located in California; its owners (officers, if a corporation) domiciled in California. Microbusinesses, with gross annual receipts less than $3,500,000; or a small manufacturing business with 25 or fewer employees also qualify.

Other government and corporate entities also use minority- and woman-owned small business certification processes to help spread opportunities to typically under-represented groups. The programs also help increase competition and ensure fair prices for buyers and taxpayers.
