Generally speaking most wraps or vehicle lettering graphics will last for five years or longer depending on the type of premium vinyl that was used. In reality that’s a very long time for a commercial vehicle, especially one that is used for deliveries. Invariably, a commercial vehicle racks up a lot of miles and the vehicle may be sold or replaced well within the five year lifespan. In addition, the business may change focus, products and services, or messaging during that same five year window. Minor changes can be corrected with decals or overlays but at some point it may be necessary to remove the outdated graphics all together. When this is the case here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Budget sufficient Time: The removal process could take more than a day. Depending on how long ago the vehicle was wrapped and whether it is typically left outside to bake in the hot sun, the vinyl could peel off in large sections or in pieces no bigger than a postage stamp.
- Heating Element: Using a torch or hair dryer to heat up the old vinyl and make it more pliable can save time.
- De-greaser/Rubbing Alcohol: When the vinyl is removed some of the residual glue may remain on the surface of the vehicle. Removing this residue is important, especially if the vehicle is being re-wrapped, because these imperfections will show up as little under surface bubbles if the residue remains. Getting the vehicle clean and free of residue is extremely important.
At SignWorks we generally quote vehicle wrap peel-offs as time and material work, especially if we did not perform the original installation. Obviously, if the wrap was not professionally installed there could be issues relative to cut marks on the vehicle under surface as well as a host of other potential problems.
