We recently had an opportunity to create, build and install evacuation signs at a middle school in Oakland. Here at SignWorks we have done many evacuation signs, but this project was much different. A typical two story office building in Oakland CA, would have about 8-16 evacuation signs, but because this was a educational facility and an open motel style building, there had to be evacuation signs installed in every room, making it 53 signs in total. The only way to accurately build the evacuation signs was to have a physical walk through of the building with the contractor and take lots of pictures of the whole facility. With the pictures, notes, building plans and evacuation plan guidelines in hand we had all we needed to create the evacuation plans. After 3 revisions and multiple visits to the fire department the plans were approved and installed.
One key point that the Oakland Fire Inspector brought to our attention was that the orientation had to be correct for every evacuation plan. She mentioned that this was a common error that designers make when making building evacuation signs.
