It’s so tempting to have a deep, dark, rich color background on banners and digital prints but depending on the quantity, it can cost you more money, especially if you are ordering large quantities. The reason is because these background colors require, what is known in the trade as a ” full bleed.” This translates to much higher ink utilization in the digital or solvent printer world. Deep reds, blues, black, etc. are produced using CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black), which are mixed in various combinations to produce other colors.

When you are working with your designer, especially on a large advertising or tradeshow project requiring lots of digital prints or banners, be mindful that “full bleeds” and the associated ink utilization will add to the projects bottom line. Consider using photo realistic images which tend to use a balanced combination of inks or select a stock vinyl color background to make your project more affordable.

Last year we worked with a non-profit organization to produce digital prints for an advertising campaign using large digital prints affixed to AC Transit buses.
