SignWorks is working on a project that involves updating a retail storefront and overhead backlit sign. New graphics and lettering are being designed to give the business a fresh new look and to add other service offerings. It would be tempting to simply remove the sign face, peel the existing graphics and lettering and re-use the existing materials. Unfortunately, the best results will be achieved by replacing the entire sign face with new Lexan sheeting.
Peeling and replacing the old graphics with a new design and lettering may appear to be more economical, but there would be “ghosting.” Ghosting means that the outline of the old lettering and graphics would show once the sign was lit from behind. It occurs because the subtle yellowing of the material over time will leave the outline of the former graphics. The former vinyl graphics would have prevented the sheeting material underneath from aging at the same rate (where it was “covered” by the vinyl graphics and lettering). The surrounding materials would have yellowed more rapidly as a result of being exposed directly to the elements. In short, it is better to use new background sheeting for the best result.
SignWorks uses Lexan for exterior backlit sign faces because the alternative (acrylic), if used outdoors, becomes brittle and will chip and crack more easily.
