As a sign vendor we are often approached to quote signage that will require a permit. Most cities and municipalities will require permits for electrical signs and exterior building fascia signs so if you are opening a new business or relocating one it makes sense to understand the zoning and permit requirements necessary prior to planning your signage. Some jurisdictions have very specific requirements and if you are leasing a commercial building the landlord or leasing agent may also have a sign criterion dictating the type of sign you can have. Some areas also have associations which will also determine what signage is allowed. Make sure you check all of these requirements before deciding on the type of sign you want rather that finding out later that illuminated signs aren’t allowed or the size and type of sign you wanted is not allowed in the space you are leasing or buying.
While SignWorks makes every effort to stay abreast of the various requirements in the localities we serve, it is in your best interest to know these things in advance so as to not exhaust design resources only to find out that what has already been designed is not allowed. Take for example the City of Hercules where illuminated signs are allowed but the association in some of the business parks will not allow them. Also, be sure that if you are leasing a space that your business license and use for the facility has been approved by the city. If it hasn’t you will be unable to secure the necessary sign permit.
