When our customers come to us for ADA compliant signs and evacuation map we act as advisors, not only in interrupting the sign code in various jurisdictions but in helping to facilitate the approval process.  Sometimes it’s an easy process and sometimes, depending on the number of constituents involved in getting through the design review process, it can be time consuming.  Often, everyone believes they have read and understood the sign code that is pertinent to the particular sign being developed, however, and especially in the area of evacuation maps, what is written can be misinterpreted even by seasoned building staff and developers.  The human “interpretation” of what is written and subtle changes in the guidelines from time to time mean that the Fire Marshall review stage is an essential part of the process.  The sign code will often call for raised (tactile) lettering and Braille, but often developers will mistakenly think that the map itself must also be raised, when in fact a digital print is all that is called for.

When you are looking for a sign company to ensure that your ADA and evacuation maps are developed to be compliant we urge you to call SignWorks at (510) 357-2000.  We will work with you and your review committee to advise you on interrupting even the most exacting standards!
